Q&A: Should I eat before exercising?

by sincerelycaroline

Today’s expert advice comes from Sheila Viers, the co-founder and President of Live Well 360, a company that is re-inventing the fitness bag because on the road to health and fitness you need a worthy companion. Live Well 360’s first bag, the Core, has been featured in Oxygen magazine and Shape magazine, as well as, on top fitness sites like FitSugar.com and DailySpark.com. The company has also launched an e-book, Eat Well 360 (for the Rest of Your Life) Diet, a complete guide to transforming your life and your relationship with food, all while enjoying healthy foods that taste incredible!

………………

sincerely caroline: We hear it a lot –– “Eating before exercising always seems to hurt my stomach, so I often tend to skip it.” However, we also know a pre-workout snack is important to the success of my sweat session. What are the best options for foods that will fuel a workout without upsetting our bellies?

sheila viers: This seems to be the case for many people, especially for really high intensity workouts first thing in the morning. In order to fuel your workout without weighing you down, aim for a combination of easy to digest protein plus carbs about 15 to 30 minutes prior to your workout.

My favorite is a half a scoop of protein powder mixed with 4 ounces of coconut water or you could also use milk (skim, 1%, or almond). If that doesn’t work for you, other ideas include half a banana with a smear of almond or peanut butter, a few whole food (minimally processed, preservative free) crackers and peanut butter, yogurt with a few blueberries or a drizzle of agave nectar.

Overall, I tell people to worry less about what the experts say is the right thing to eat (since new research is always showing something different) and instead focus on what you need to do in order to feel your best and have a great workout.
