afterglow’s gluten-free makeup

by caroline

I’ll be the first to admit it: I love makeup and other beauty products, but I’m not always stellar at using them. While I have always enjoyed playing with different makeup looks, the truth is my job doesn’t require me to put on my “face” on a daily basis. So, I tend to be a bit … well … lazy with my routine.

Still, I was pretty stoked when the gorgeous folks at Afterglow got in touch with me about their certified gluten-free makeup line (they were the very first line to be certified gluten-free). In addition to being gluten-free, the makeup is also:

– Cruelty Free
– Fragrance Free
– Vegan
– Paraben Free

Lucky for me, I had two events coming up around the time that I first received the makeup, so I got to work trying it out. (Twist my arm, right?!)

The look on the left is a bit more dramatic with smoky eyes and deep red lips; the look on the right was lighter, more ethereal and shimmery. Neither photo is edited (hence, the dark circles … eek) because I wanted you to know what the makeup really looks like.

My favorites? The powder is absolutely amazing. I tend to have a few flaky, dry spots on my face that makeup likes to cling to, but this powder just glided right over them. I also love the lip glosses (one beauty product that I actually do ALWAYS have in my purse) and lip sticks. Surprisingly enough, I also adore the mascara. I have a bad habit of rubbing my eyes, so I am not always great at applying mascara, especially if it’s a heavy, cake-y formula. But this mascara is absolutely weightless!

The part I love the most about this makeup line is that it takes the guess work out of gluten-free beauty products. As many people make the transition into a gluten-free diet, they don’t always consider their personal care products. However, it is so important to consider the everyday items you use, including toothpaste, mouthwash, makeup and more. On the other hand, a few other people aren’t completely sold on the idea of gluten-free beauty products, but I am always from the school of thought that says, “Why take the risk?” PLUS, if you think about how much lipstick and lip gloss goes into your mouth over the course of a year, then the choice is a no-brainer.

Bonus? These products are also great sensitive skin and vegans who are seeking cruelty-free options. Want to learn more about gluten-free beauty? Check out my interview with Afterglow Founder Kristin Adams.
